Human fungal pathogens account for an estimated 1 billion infections and over 1.6 million deaths annually! Staggered by these numbers?
Join the Shlezinger Lab!
PhD Students & Postdoctoral Researchers in Medical Mycology
We are looking for motivated PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to join the Shlezinger Lab at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Our research focuses on medically important fungal pathogens and their interactions with the mammalian host, with the broader goal of understanding how fungi survive immune attack, adapt to the host environment, and cause disease — and how these processes can be exploited to develop new antifungal strategies.
We are particularly interested in candidates excited by clinical mycology, fungal pathogenesis, antifungal immunity, fungal stress responses, and fungal–host interactions.
Current research in the lab spans several interconnected areas:
Fungal pathogenesis and host adaptation
Antifungal immunity and regulated cell death
Mycoviruses and fungal virulence
Fungal stress responses and antifungal drug discovery
Our work combines in vivo models of fungal infection with fluorescent reporters coupled to advanced imaging and single-cell approaches, alongside molecular and cellular biology, immunology, and microbiology, to address fundamental questions in fungal biology and clinically relevant questions in medical mycology.
Fully funded PhD and postdoctoral positions are currently available through an ERC Starting Grant.
We are particularly interested in researchers with a PhD in microbiology, mycology, immunology, molecular biology, virology, or a related discipline, and in candidates who are excited about developing an independent research direction within the broader themes of the lab.
Fungal experience is welcome, but not required. What matters most is scientific curiosity, motivation, and a strong interest in the questions we study.
Additional postdoctoral fellowship opportunities
Candidates who are eligible for competitive external fellowships are also encouraged to apply. These fellowships can provide an additional route to joining the lab and developing an independent research project.
Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports outstanding international researchers undertaking postdoctoral research at Israeli universities.
The fellowship is particularly relevant to candidates from outside Israel who would like to pursue postdoctoral research in the Shlezinger Lab.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: November 11, 2026
Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship in Israel provides an opportunity for eligible U.S. scholars to conduct postdoctoral research at an Israeli academic institution.
Candidates interested in joining the Shlezinger Lab through the Fulbright program are encouraged to contact us early enough to discuss the proposed research project and application requirements.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: September 15, 2026
How to apply
If you are interested in joining the Shlezinger Lab, please send:
*Your CV
*A short description of your research interests and background
*A brief explanation of why you are interested in joining the lab
Please email your application or initial inquiry to:
Neta Shlezinger, PhD
Koret School of Veterinary Medicine
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
neta.shlezinger1@mail.huji.ac.il
For postdoctoral candidates interested in applying through Azrieli, Fulbright, or another external fellowship, please indicate this in your email and contact us before the relevant fellowship deadline so that we have time to discuss potential projects and prepare the application together.
We look forward to hearing from motivated scientists interested in pushing the boundaries of medical mycology and fungal–host interactions.
